FMF has been around since the days of Marty Tripes
and dual shocks when Flying Machine Factory owner Donnie Emler was
a young, ambitious entrepreneur trying to get off the ground. Now
FMF has become a world power in two and four stroke exhaust
technology, grasping onto succes with confidence.Don Emler wanted to develop a titanium exhaust
system that was modular in design and that would give the customer
the option to mix and match components, so that it would suit their
budget and performance needs. With the help of George Luttig, FMF's
Director of R&D, they came up with the Titanium 4.
The Magic of
Titanium
The FMF Titanium 4 muffler is, in most cases,
50% lighter than the stock unit!
So what is the deal with titanium? First off, it
is the mystique of the exotic material that draws the attention of
the masses. But most of all it is the fact of extreme weight
savings without giving up strength. In most cases, FMF's titanium
exhaust system provides a 50% savings in weight! Today's 4-strokes
are getting lighter, but they still need all the help they can
get.The titanium used in all of FMF's
exhaust systems is a military grade; if it is good enough to
protect our country, it is surely good enough to abuse at the
track.
Make Your Own
System
One of FMF's bigget goals was to create an
affordable exhaust system that is completely modular. What exactly
do we mean? The complete Titanium 4 system is made of three
interchangable parts, a header, mid-pipe, and the muffler. The
muffler is made of titanium only, of course, BUT the header and the
mid-pipe are also available in stainless steel. In addition to the
two materials, the header is produced in the patented
Powerbomb™ or the standard Hi-flo design.
Understand? It is very simple, and was designed with the intention
of affordability to the masses who want more usable power from
their 4-strokes.
The Havasu WORCS course was nothing but power
robbing. The added top end over-rev power from the FMF exhaust was
crucial.
In addition to the numerous combinations available
between the header and mid-pipes, the Titanium 4 muffler also has
two options regarding length. The longer, 17" muffler is targeted
for the riders who need to be more cautious with keeping exhaust
noise down to a repectable level. In exchange for the quiet
characteristic of the 17", a little peak power will be sacrificed
(barely noticeable by the average rider). The second option
involves a shorter 14" muffler which produces the greatest increase
in power output at the expense of a louder note.What about the Powerbomb™ header? What is it
exactly? The Powerbomb physically is a bulge in the header toward
the rear of the pipe, as you can see in this photo. The bulge is
basically a pre-muffler which deadens the brute sound of today's
four-strokes. The gases cool, expand, then contract once entering
the chamber. This process actually speeds up the flow creating more
power.

Modular system - the mid-pipe and header are
available in either titanium, or the more affordable stainless
steel.

The muffler can be used with the stock header,
by using the supplied sleeve.
High quality hardware and components
supplied
The mounting system of the muffler was the
only major downfall of the system. Two o-rings must be carefully
placed on the muffler as shown in this photo while placing the clamp and the
required spacer in the correct position. The process is not
difficult, just time consuming and relatively tedious.
Louder exhaust note (but if it really matters,
a quieter 17" muffler is available).
