Project Honda CRF450 - FMF Titanium 4 Exhaust System - The Installation

Source: Dirtbike at Off-Road.com
First step is to remove the right side panel to gain access to the muffler mounting bolts. The muffler is held on with two bolts and a clamp where the header and muffler meet.
The header is the next item to be removed. This is held on with two flange nuts at the cylinder. Remove the nuts, and pull the header away toward the front of the bike.
Place the FMF Powerbomb header, with the stock header flange nuts handy, to hold the header in place. Make sure to keep all nuts, bolts and clamps loose until everything is aligned properly.
Next subject is the titanium mid-pipe (also available is a less-expensive stainless steel version). The mid-pipe simply joins the muffer to the header. Slide the supplied clamp over the mid-pipe, then slide the mid-pipe over the header. Place the mounting bolt in place as shown, making sure it remains loose, until system is completely installed.
Before sliding the Titanium 4 muffler in place, it is suggested to apply some hi-temp silicone at all joints.
Now install the muffler over the mid-pipe, ready to install the supplied springs for stability. (note the spring tool)
The tricky part of the installation awaits: Slide the provided o-rings over the titanium canister as shown. Next slowly slide the mounting clamp also as shown. Make sure the muffler is aligned properly before proceeding to the next step (a diagram is supplied to show the proper alignment).
An aluminum spacer which comes with the kit must be placed between the subframe and the muffler mounting clamp. The o-rings must seat in the mounting clamp's groves; which proves to take some time and patience. The process is not difficult, but doesn't just fall together. Be patient.
Now that each part is in place, tighten the following:
1. The header nuts to the specified torque spec
2. Muffler clamp which joins the mid-pipe and the header
3. The two muffler bolts.
Fourdifferent end caps are available to suit the many needs of most riders: the standard hi-flo 2", 1 3/4", 1 1/2" for traction control, and a spark arrestor module for forest legal applications as shown in the photo.
After making sure everything is tight and in it's proper place, start the bike to check for any exhaust leaks. As long as everything seems ok, you are ready to enjoy the added power and light weight of the FMF Titanium 4 exhaust system.

  • More Power!
  • Titanium = strength
  • Nearly 50% lighter than the stock system
  • Interchangable end caps (including a spark arrestor)
  • Modular system - the mid-pipe and header are available in either titanium, or the more affordable stainless steel.
  • Good fitment of all pieces
  • The muffler can be used with the stock header, by using the supplied sleeve.
  • High quality hardware and components supplied
  • The mounting system of the muffler was the only major downfall of the system. Two o-rings must be carefully placed on the muffler as shown in this photo while placing the clamp and the required spacer in the correct position. The process is not difficult, just time consuming and relatively tedious.
  • Louder exhaust note (but if it really matters, a quieter 17" muffler is available).
