For maximum stopping power up
front, put the bike on a crate and loosen all the pinch bolts. Then
spin the wheel and have a buddy squeeze the front brake lever tight.
While he holds the lever, re-tighten the pinch bolts. This helps
correctly align the shoes to the drum and the axle.
Always safety wire the nuts
holding your air filter in place. If the holding nuts come loose, they
can be ingested into the engine.
Half worn knobbies can be given
fresh edges and/or regrooved if you pop for one of these $60 tools.
If you're cheap, like me, a
plain old hacksaw will do a reasonable job. Use a little soapy water
to make the cutting easier. Oh yeah, don't saw through the tire.
When transporting your bike in
a truck, place the front wheel in the center of the bed, then swing
the rear end over to the passenger side. This will give you a clear
view through the rear view mirror.
Old mufflers are not only loud,
they rob horsepower when the packing blows out, or gets saturated with
oil. Re-pack it with ordinary insulation material, available at most
any home repair place.
To make sure your rear wheel is
adjusted and aligned properly, forget about the old way of measuring
from the swingarm pivot to the center of the axle. If you have a dual
shock bike (and who doesn't?), measure from the bottom shock eye to the
axle. It's a lot easier to do, and there's less margin for error.
