Mark Kariya

While not quite as old as dirt itself, photojournalist Mark Kariya is certainly a veteran of the dirt bike world with a career that spans nearly 30 years. Along the way, he's sampled nearly every form of the sport--from both behind the lens and keyboard and up on the pegs--all over the world, with his favorites being found on desert and woods trails.

With the price of fuel climbing, more people are considering motorcycles as an economical form of transportation. For those who favor the off-road lifestyle, the obvious choice is the dual-sport.

"A lot of people say it takes a year to get used to your bike," Red Bull KTM's David Pearson relates. "I kind of disagreed with that until I hopped on KTMs [last year], it felt like, because I rode the [Kawasaki] 500s forever!"

Enduros used to be THE off-road events that any dirt bike rider aspired to. For some, they were like guided trail rides.

Held at Mesquite, Nevada’s Mesquite Motocross Park, round 12, presented by Carter Powersports, turned out to be both a contest of wills and battle of attrition—and not just by the two players everyone had their eyes on.

The winner is the one with the quickest time over the hill, especially in the eastern U.S. which is the bastion of the AMA U.S. Hillclimb Championships presented by Pace American. The 'climbs out west are generally on rougher, more technical hills, but even so you can count on the top riders to conquer them.
