I read and interview Mike Hobbs has with The San Bernadino Ranger Bob Wood posted 2/01/07. Bob Wood has apparently not read the California MVC, because his statement about being frustrated at bikes showing up with a valid plate, but not being street legal is unacceptable. The CA,. MVC clearly states what is required to operate a OHV in this state. Display of the appropriate tag, and/or a valid license plate, USF approved spark arrestor, and sound levels not to exceed the limits for that year vehicle are it. There is nothing that requires a street licensed Motorcycle to retain it's street legal equipment, or that prohibits the removal of such equipment. In fact, the removal of mirrors and turn signals reduce the chances of injury from broken glass or debris or protruding objects in the event of a crash. The CA mvc is very clear on what's required, and prohibited, and Rangers in the forrest cannot enforce laws that don't exist. Every violation will always have a specific section of the mvc that has been violated. Displaying a valid proof of insurance card when operating a OHV could also be seen as insurance fraud, as insurance policies for street driven motorcycles are invalid when the vehicles are used off road or in competition, therefore the insurance card would be invalid.
