Project WR450F - Maxxis Tires - Thirty-Five years in the Making

What's the most expensive item on your motorcycle that needs to be replaced on a regular basis? Tires! Our tire investigation crew (me) set off on a mission to find the best all around off road tires for our project WR450F. Our criterion was simple: price, handling and they needed longevity on several types of terrain. Other tires we tested did better in specific areas but Maxxis "Maxxcross" Intermediate rubber came out on top for all around use. After mounting the tires and packing a survival kit we headed to the California desert.

Conditions were so harsh it seemed like the last time it rained our sources of oil roamed the planet. In the dry and dusty hard pack conditions the Maxxis tires stuck to the dirt with conviction while cornering. It was also noted that knob's weren't ripped from the tire carcass as happens frequently with tires that have good traction on hard terrain. Performance was well above our expectations in the nasty hard stuff.

Our next test was in a desert that had seen so much rain the locals were gathering animals and looking for a huge wooden boat. This type of rain on packed dirt turns things into a slippery greasy slop similar to what you pull from your nose after a long ride. With anticipation of the front end washing out, the Maxxis IT's did a nice job staying on track with limited sliding.

Mud did build up a bit in between the knobs, but you felt in control and had warning before sliding out. After two rides the tires still looked new so we raced the Adelanto G.P. on them. Adelanto is a true torture test for a tire, pavement, hard pack, sand, groomed burms and that's a half lap into the race! During the race I was amazed at just how well the Intermediate tires did on a course with such a variety of terrain.

Now with six rides and a race our Maxxis shoes they are showing wear but still usable. Single purpose tires will do a better job for an individual task but for all around use we've seen nothing better then the Maxxis Intermediate front and rear combo.

1. Price - Excellent

2. Handling - Good

3. Wear - Excellent
Another reason Maxxis beat out the  competition is their level of support.

Just about every off road race we went to this year had a Maxxis box van in the pits offering tire selection, air pressure tips and encouragement to those that put on a race face. When these tires are toast I'll be forking out the cash for a new set, and that my friends says a lot. See you on the trails and at the races,
Mike Hobbs
