MX on the EXC, cont'd.

Two oil filters are used to keep the bike running on and on and on.

But when it came time to leave the throttle on long enough to clear a mild, 40 foot double, it was no problem. After becoming accustomed to the characteristics of the KTM 4-stroke, the bike can be adapted to many different types of riding. The extra weight of the KTM does become pretty obvious when a lot of body english is needed to adjust through mx-related sections, such as a multi-double rhythm section.

 Details

As we mentioned above, all KTMs come stock with numerous aftermarket parts, from the handlebars to the o-ring chain. This is a good thing, especially when it comes to the wonder device: the hydraulic clutch. We can't say enough about the fluid operated clutch. No more fading under heavy abuse, and no more cable lubing before every ride (if you are fanatical about friction-free movement).

Dry, hard pack corners such as this are where the 4-stroke machine becomes even more fun.

The Brembo brakes definitely have a solid feel, with their eccentric shaped rotors. We have seen the stock front brake pads last for over a year! (but that might be part of the reason why the KTMs always have that unmistakable squeal when braking).

The advantages are many: nickel plated pipe, wide foot pegs, kick stand that doesn't get in the way (ask Shane Watts...he even uses it), race-worthy bars, adjustable clamps, hard anodized suspension internals for prolonged oil longevity (this makes a HUGE difference in oil life), natural colored fuel tanks for great visibilty, no suspension linkage to grease, accessability of the air filter with the use of no tools, brake pads that last, and ergonomics that allow for comfort, standing or sitting.

The company of KTM is all about details. Buy an orange bike, and more than likely, its ready to race from the showroom floor.

One last thing, what is the deal with the ever popular jab of, "KTMs just seem to have that "Euro feel". What exactly is the "Euro feel"? We have no idea. Just get on it and be comfortable, we were.

KTM prides themselves in producing a motorycle for almost anyone's needs, whether it be the weekend woods rider, or the upcoming pro motocrosser. More than likely, you'll be able to find one to suit your needs.

We'd like to thank Fun Mart Cycle Center for setting up the test.
