Ask MX Tuner

Mark Klein is ready to answer your technical questions! Mark has extensive experience race tuning off-road motorcycles for local and national races. If you check back through our 1998/99 archives you will see a series called "Dirtbikes 101." Mark brings his expertise to fielding your maintenance and tuning questions. Send Mark an e-mail:

  • Subject line should be "Ask MX Tuner".
  • Suggest a Title for your Question - Like "Sizzling CR?"
  • The problem you are having.
  • Model , Make and Year of your motorcycle - if applicable.
  • Any information or symptoms concerning the problem that he should know... The more detail the better. Examples:
    • compression test results
    • spark plug color
    • death rattles
    • pinging
    • or even black goo flying out the silencer.
  • Things you have tried to fix the problem.
  • Your name if you want it published - otherwise you will go nameless!
Important Notes:
  • Send all questions to MX Tuner. They will be reviewed by the MXOffroad.com staff and forwarded to Mark to be answered in his next column.
  • Overly Vague, General, or Incomprehensible questions will not be passed on to Mark. For Example: "like dude how do i fix my bike it wolnt strt cannot jmp thwe big jumps cause it wolnt run thanks"
  • Make every effort to be reasonably grammatical - or the MXOffroad.com staff may cheerfully delete your question.
  • Make your question count! We have back issues of all these columns - look through them. Questions that have been answered in every column since the beginning of time may be ignored.
  • Please do not ask for an immediate e-mail response - you will not get one.
  • Cutoff for submissions is the 15th day of each month. Responses will be posted the following month.

There is no substitute for a decent owners manual, service manual, or shop manual.
If you don't have one - get one! It is well worth the investment! You can order replacement owners manuals through an authorized dealer.

hello, mx tuner, My main bearings were shot on my 96 cr 125 with the manual a buddy and i replaced the bearings. After putting the engine back together and in my bike check to see if it would shift and it does not. We double checked shift forks making sure they were facing the right way the shift paws and shift lever are installed correctly but still wont budge shift up or down. Shift lever moves about 1/8 inch either way and thats it. Any help would be appreciated. Any chance we still put the shift forks in incorrectly?
