The Yokohama Geolandar H/T G056 is Yokohama’s all-season highway tire that has been developed for the drivers of trucks, SUVs and full-size vans looking to operate their vehicle on-road year-round—with some easy off-roading—even with wintry conditions. The tread design blends a quiet and comfortable ride with long tread-life.
The two-ply tires—three plies in load range E—provide strength and promote ride comfort. The tire’s internal structure includes a polyester casing and two steel belts that are reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon for extra durability.
According to Yokohama’s documentation: “The Geolandar H/T G056 tires feature advanced all-season compound that combines orange oil technology and micro silica that enhance wet traction with high-tech polymers that resist wear and permit the tread to deliver year-round traction by remaining pliable in cold temperatures. This compound is molded into a symmetric tread design featuring adaptive shoulder blocks that form continuous shoulder ribs to reduce road noise and promote even wear. Triple 3-D sipes help stabilize the tread blocks to promote even wear, as well as provide more biting edges to enhance foul-weather traction. Independent intermediate and center tread blocks feature zigzag sides and multi-angle lateral grooves promote traction in wet and wintry conditions.”
For most light truck and SUV owners, everyday driving is the main use of their vehicle. The design and construction of the Geolandar H/T G056 provides style and performance, delivering an excellent ride, great performance and long tread life. Something called dynamic spring control stiffens the lower sidewall as the tire turns and allows the upper sidewall to flex easily over bumps on the road, which results in a comfortable ride without sacrificing steering response. Yokohama explains that the large shoulder blocks provide strength and stiffness for outstanding cornering. Grooves around the circumferential are designed to improve water evacuation while cross grooves provide more biting edges for better winter traction.
These are seasonal tires, not winter tires. As a seasonal tire, they’re awesome in snow. But don’t expect them to act like a winter tire because they won’t. They provide a quiet, comfortable ride and great wet traction. During testing, we gauged them to be fuel efficient and have a dependable constant grip in dry conditions as well. I really like these tires.
The 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 4×4 on which these Geolandar H/T G056 LT265/75R16 tires were reviewed, has over 100,000 miles on its odometer, and these Yokohama Geolandar tires are the fourth set of tires that have been on it. The first set of replacement tires were a repeat of the OEM tires. After that I choose a well-known brand that shall remain nameless, and they did not have the ride, traction, or mileage of the OEM tires. I’m very happy to say that the Geolandars returned all three to the Avalanche.
The Geolandars’ ride is equal if not better than the OEM tires, and the forecasted mileage is also about equal. Off-road and in light snow the traction is superior to both the OEM tires and the nameless replacements. As you can see in the photographs, the Geolandars’ average tread wear was 1/16-inch for the 5,700 miles of the test. Since the original tread depth was 13/32 inch, 1/16-inch (or 2/32nds) wear represents a forecasted total mileage of the Geolandars before replacement is needed to be in the 37,500- to 40,000-mile range, an excellent forecasted total mileage for tires exhibiting the traction and ride that these tires provide.
The following information will assist you in getting the maximum use out of a set of tires – including the Yokohama Geolandar H/T G056. One of the most important issues concerning tires is also the most controllable by you: tire inflation. Proper tire inflation pressure is key to protecting the lifetime of tires, especially on off-road vehicles (on which many owners change the air pressure to perform better in each given situation). Like the relationship between your head and your hat, your tires do more than just support your vehicles. They cushion you over rough surfaces, carry you to new heights, accelerate your body, and brake your speed. Clearly, your life and those of your fellow travelers are in the “hands” of your tires, and the only way you can reap the rewards from the engineering that went into your tires is to maintain their proper inflation.
To fully realize its potential, a tire must have its proper shape or profile to do its job. Too little air pressure will cause it to flex too much, creating overheating and stress, which can lead to premature tire failure. However, too much air can be nearly as dangerous. An over-inflated tire has a reduced contact area with the road. When you need good contact on the road for braking, especially on wet roads, an over-inflated tire could cause you to lose control of your vehicle.
Failure to maintain correct inflation pressures may result in accelerated and uneven tread wear, improper vehicle handling, and excessive heat buildup. To make sure you maintain the correct pressure in your tires, check the air pressure regularly. The recommended inflation pressures for your tires are indicated on the certification label or in your owner’s manual.
Check your tire air pressure at least once a month, before each trip, and on each morning that you’ll be driving during a trip. Inflation pressures should be checked when the tires are cold, that is, before they have been driven one mile. Heat generated during driving increases air pressure above the proper cold inflation pressure. This is normal, so never “bleed” air from a hot tire, since this could result in dangerous under-inflation.
Make sure all tire valves and extensions are equipped with valve caps to keep out dirt and moisture. Metal valve caps produce a better and longer lasting seal than do cheap plastic caps. Installing a new valve assembly is good practice whenever a tire is replaced.
