New Yamaha Dirt Bikes For 2002!

Improved Four-Strokes/Proven Two-Strokes

Nov. 01, 2002 By ORC STAFF

YZ 125

Like the YZ 250, the YZ125 is a completely new animal for 2002. Starting with an all-new, twin-spar frame that boosts lateral rigidity while reducing weight to deliver minimal flex for improved, sharper handling. A new, bigger- bore 38mm Mikuni TMX carburetor and reshaped exhaust and scavenging porting deliver harder-hitting low-and top-end power and higher over-rev capacity. A brand-new, close-ratio 5-speed transmission helps reduce weight while ensuring maximum hookup and corner-exiting punch.

NEW FOR 2002!

Engine:

  • Liquid-cooled, 124cc, reed valve-inducted 2-stroke engine lightweight, compact and boasts numerous modifications and upgrades for 2002.
  • Newly designed cylinder construction features reshaped exhaust and scavenging ports for harder-hitting low-end response, stronger top-end power and greater over-rev capacity.
  • All-new piston and wider piston ring improves performance while increasing durability.
  • Bigger-bore 40mm (up from 38mm) Mikuni TMX carburetor with reshaped needle and needle jet ensures precise fuel/air metering and crisper throttle response throughout the RPM range.
  • Digital CD ignition system delivers precise spark and monitors engine speed to ensure optimal timing for faster, stronger response during hard acceleration.
  • New-design, large-capacity radiator features a 10-row core (up from 9 rows) with 4 louvers (up from 3) to deliver maximum cooling efficiency at all performance levels.
  • All-new exhaust pipe with redesigned silencer features a reshaped tapered section for broader power delivery with stronger low-end hit.
  • Redesigned airbox features improved sealing for greater durability.
  • Primary kickstarting ensures easy restarts in any gear.
  • All-new, 5-speed close-ratio transmission (down from 6-speed to help reduce overall weight) with heavy-duty, multi-plate clutch ensures optimal hookup for outstanding acceleration and corner exiting power.
  • All-new, high-tension steel, twin-spar frame features redesigned elliptically curved main pipe and larger-diameter down tube for greater rigidity and lighter weight.
  • Removable aluminum rear subframe now constructed of square-section pipe for reduced weight.
  • Revamped front fork internals include retooled, two-piece expansion piston and larger left-side porting for smoother oil flow and enhanced damping performance.
  • Low-friction outer tubes and aluminum piston rods ensure smoother, more compliant fork stroke for superior handling and lighter steering.
  • Lightweight 46mm inverted Kayaba cartridge fork features 11 .8" of travel with compression and rebound damping adjustability.
  • All-new hydroformed swingarm is lighter and stronger for reduced weight, greater rigidity and more compliant rear suspension action, while an anodized finish gives it a trick, factory team-style look.
  • Rear suspension refinements for 2002 include new shock absorber settings with revised linkage ratios and a larger pivot shaft for greater rigidity in conjunction with new swingarm.
  • Rear suspension system features fully adjustable Kayaba shock with 12.4" of travel and separate adjusters for high- and low-speed compression damping.
  • 250mm fully floating front disc and all-new 245mm (up from 240mm) rear disc brakes deliver stronger stopping power.
  • Redesigned rear brake caliper support helps enhance braking performance with added rigidity and durability.
  • New, reshaped front wheel hub features a 20mm increase (50 to 70mm) in the bearing span for greater rigidity and sharper, more controlled steering performance.
  • Lightweight 21" front and 19" rear Excel rims provide exceptional durability and help reduce unsprung weight for optimal suspension performance and handling.
  • Premium Dunlop 739 knobbies offer race-spec traction and excellent wear.
  • All-new seat and fuel tank are flatter, while a retooled steering crown (repositioned 10mm forward and 5mm upward) and lower handlebar all help create greater freedom of movement and more comfortable ergonomics for riders of all sizes.
  • New seat, fuel tank, radiator shrouds and side covers feature all-new graphics.
  • New-design fuel tank cap is wider-diameter for easier usage, while larger tank opening ensures faster, hassle-free refueling.
  • Wide, cleated, folding cast alloy footpegs provide excellent comfort, grip and ground clearance.
  • Cleated rear brake lever and folding shift lever tip offer superb grip and exceptional durability.
  • Repackable exhaust silencer.
  • Durable, comfortable handlebar grips.
  • Trick, works-style clutch lever features race-spec barrel adjuster for on-the-fly adjustability.
  • Stainless steel clutch cable for longer life.
